Why remove the connection between EndNote and Word?

Before you send or submit a thesis or article it is a good idea to remove the connection between EndNote and Word. If you send or submit a document connected to EndNote this may cause problems if the person receiving it hasn't got access to your library.

Otherwise it can be practical to remove the connection between EndNote and Word before submitting articles or theses, because then you can manually change citations or the bibliography if that's needed.

Step-by-step guidance - Removing the connection between EndNote and Word

Do this when you want to send a copy of your document without Cite While You Write field codes. The connection between EndNote and Word is then removed in the copy.

Make a copy of the document you want to convert to plain text. This is done by clicking "File" and "Save as..." in Word. This is the copy you will convert to plain text. Give the new document a good, descriptive name, for example "Master thesis - plain text copy".
Open the new document you just created.
Go to the EndNote tab and click on Convert citations and bibliography, and select Convert to Plain Text.

You will see a dialog box with a message informing you that links to EndNote will now be removed. Click OK to remove the links to EndNote.
NB! Only do this conversion in a new copy of your document - do not do this in your original document.
You can easily check whether the link between EndNote and Word has been removed or not by clicking on a reference in the text. For documents linked to EndNote, selected references will have a gray background colour. For documents without a link to EndNote, selected references will not have this grey background colour.

NB! It is the version WITHOUT a connection to EndNote you send to your supervisor.
